Can’t Miss

The Hollywood Reporter has named “Hunted” one of 10 can’t-miss series at MIP, the international television market in Cannes, France. Click here for an interview about the series with Melissa George and me.

XF3

Since The X-Files: I Want to Believe was released more than three years ago, the question I have been asked most often is, “When is the next X-Files movie coming?”

The box-office performance of the last film has made it difficult to answer. Some people said the audience just wasn’t there anymore. Others blamed the subject matter, the relatively modest budget, the lack of promotion, the release date, or the movie itself.

But wherever the finger of blame was pointed, I told everyone and anyone who would listen that it would be a mistake to count out The X-Files. “Don’t give up,” I kept saying, echoing the line Father Crissman told Scully in the last film.

Support from fans around the world, frequently spearheaded by the amazing team at XFilesNews.com, has been unwavering. Time and again, X-Philes have mounted imaginative and powerful campaigns to get the studio’s attention – to remind 20th Century Fox that they are sitting on one of the greatest franchises in history, a creative and commercial gold mine that has been left languishing.

Now we are only eight months away from December 2012, the series’ fabled date for alien colonization. I wish I could write today to announce that a script has been written, or even commissioned. Despite my cheerleading, cajoling and plain nagging these past few years, that is not the case.

But I am not writing today to say I am giving up.

I am writing to say it is not too late to make a third X-Files movie.

I am writing to say I still believe the audience is out there for an epic film that would bring to a close the series’ rich and complex alien storyline.

I am writing to say leaving the last chapter of this great story untold is a terrible shame and great waste.

I am writing to say I won’t give up.

And I hope you won’t, either.

I’m Delighted to Announce…

… my new series for Cinemax and the BBC will be called Hunted.

“Nemesis”

The BBC and Cinemax have announced the start of production. Read the full announcement here.

John Neville

The great John Neville has died at the age of 86. A highly regarded Shakespearean actor, Mr. Neville was known to X-Files audiences as “the Well-Manicured Man,” the courtly, mysterious member of the Syndicate who met an untimely and heroic demise in The X-Files: Fight the Future. Like so many of the wonderful actors on The X-Files, we didn’t know when we first cast Mr. Neville how central his part would become to the life of the series. It was only because he was so effortlessly good that we found ourselves wanting, then needing, to bring his character back again and again. He was as lovely a man off-screen as he was a performer on-screen, and we were blessed to have had the opportunity to work with him.

Melissa George in “Nemesis”

Melissa George has been cast in the lead role in my new series, now titled Nemesis, for BBC1 and Cinemax. Read the story here.

It’s Official

The BBC has commissioned my new television series, whose working title is Morton. The series will be produced with Kudos Film and Television. More details on Morton (and its broadcast in the U.S., and around the world) in the months to come.

Instant “X-Files”

If you’re a Netflix subscriber like I am, then you’ll be delighted to learn that all nine seasons of The X-Files are now available to “Watch Instantly.” That means you can stream any episode you like at any time on your computer or via one of Netflix’s other device partners, such as Xbox, PS3 or TiVo. Very cool!

Big Light Video

We’re adding a new feature to Big Light.  In the weeks and months ahead, we’ll post short, original video interviews with some of the creative minds with whom I’ve collaborated on The X-Files, Millennium, The Lone Gunmen, Night Stalker and other projects.  It’s a way to gather insights into the work we’ve done, as well as learn what they’re up to now.  We hope you enjoy them.

“Breaking Bad” Returns

A reminder that Breaking Bad, my favorite show on television, returns for a third season on AMC on Sunday, March 21.  The show was created by the great Vince Gilligan (with whom I collaborated on The X-Files, The Lone Gunmen, Robbery Homicide Division and Night Stalker) and features several other Ten Thirteen alumni, including stars Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul as well as John Shiban, Michelle Maclaren and Mark Freeborn. Don’t miss it!
