Dear Frank,
We’re approaching the three year anniversary of the premier of IWTB. Almost three years ago I was running around the house with a roll of masking tape taping X’s onto windows and mirrors like an insane, overly excited fangirl (don’t judge). And being able to sit in that theater and watch Mulder and Scully take on the world again was an amazing feeling. The entire fandom came together and nerded out like never before, and at the end of the movie Mulder and Scully waved to us from their boat—just in case it was goodbye.
See I’m here to tell everyone—you, the cast, the crew, the fandom, Fox, the intern at Fox who makes coffee, and anyone else—that can’t be the end. That cannot be goodbye. I adored I Want to Believe, but there’s a lot more to be told still, and The X-Files is too epic of a story to not have the ending it deserves. But The X-Files wasn’t just the story of Mulder and Scully, or the amazing journeys you wrote for them. The X-Files is the story of the fandom, too. It’s the story of otherwise completely unlikely friendships that span continents and oceans and bring together fans young, old, and anywhere in between. It’s what’s allowed for Phile karaoke nights and late night re-watches. The show has raised money for charity and brought awareness to causes that had none. The X-Files has inspired endless creativity—from videos to artwork to fanfic and even a few future TV producers, writers, and directors.
To not do the story justice would not only be a disservice to the show, but also the fandom that so adores it. Almost a decade off the air and you still have a passionate fanbase. Think of all that XF3 would inspire. Think of the hell that will reign loose when Philes from all over the world descend upon Los Angeles to see off Mulder and Scully one last time.
The story can’t end here because Mulder and Scully aren’t finished, and neither are we. So if there are any skeptics out there—at Fox or anywhere in between—send this along to them. Mulder and Scully taught us to believe, and you keep telling us “don’t give up.” So I’m putting my faith in those two statements, and that’s a lot coming from a science nerd who usually reserves her faith for evidence. I know you won’t let us down, and that you’re as determined as we are.
Roileigh
Rest assured that I am doing everything I can to make this a reality. I won’t give up — and hope you won’t, either.
