The X-Files is a science fiction television series, created by Chris Carter, which aired from 1993 to 2002. The show was the most successful in Fox network's history, and its characters and slogans (e.g., "The Truth Is Out There", "Trust No One", "I Want to Believe") became pop culture touchstones in the 1990s. Known as one of the most defining series of its era, The X-Files tapped into public mistrust of governments and large institutions, and embraced conspiracy theories and spirituality, as it centered on efforts to uncover the existence of alien life. The series has also birthed two theatrical movies (The X-Files: Fight the Future and The X Files: I Want To Believe), and a spin-off series (The Lone Gunmen).
Series Origins
The executive producer and creator of The X-Files, Chris Carter, was a protege of Brandon Tartikoff, and eventually became a protege of Peter Roth, who developed a number of pilots for NBC and Disney for both executives. Roth was impressed enough with Chris Carter's writing that by 1992, when Roth moved to Twentieth Century Fox as the President of TV Production, he signed Chris Carter to develop programs for the network. Chris Carter pitched an idea to Peter Roth, that was inspired by his childhood love for such shows as Kolchak: The Night Stalker, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, and The Twilight Zone. Chris Carter, sensing a void, discussed what was not on television with Peter Roth at that time, and the idea for the series took shape: Two FBI agents, one a believer and one a skeptic, would be assigned, or requested to be assigned, cases involving the Paranormal, UFOs, or other unexplained events, that did not fit into normal channels of police investigation: The X-Files. After several pitches, the show was greenlit to go into production through Fox's Vice President Bod Greenblat, and Fox's President Peter Chernin. Filming on the "Pilot" began in March 1993, and the episode aired September 10, 1993.
